About Irina Petrik, soprano

“Born and raised in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, her zest for performance is matched only by a desire to promote her culture, a vocation she purses through song” (Times Union, 2010). Irina Petrik is thrilled to be offering this Russian diction workshop to Ars Musica after her recent Slavic adventure with Lowell House Opera at Harvard University where she has successfully sung the title role in the US premiere of The Snow Maiden by Rimsky-Korsakov. Fuse Concert Review described her interpretation of Snegurochka as “an exceptionally powerful voice that contains a metallic edge. This cold tinge makes her sound a perfect expression of the character’s icy beauty” and Nova Gazeta named her “the one to watch”.

Passionate about her native language, Irina also served as a Russian diction coach for Lowell House Opera and together with the resident conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, they translated the entire opera word by word from Russian to English. Once a soloist with the Kiev Youth Symphony, Irina performed throughout the former Soviet Union as a member of the popular Skazka children’s theater and, later, with the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, Maliy Theater and Kiev Operetta House. She graduated with honors from the historic Gliere Music College, where she studied voice performance after winning a four year scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. Irina moved to the United States in 2000 and graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2006. She has performed with Opera Saratoga (formerly Lake George Opera), CR Productions at Cohoes Music Hall, Mosaic Arts Opera, Hubbard Hall Opera Theater, the Altlanta Folk Orchestra, the Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra, Barynya Ensemble, Russian Winter Festival, Festival of United Nations, Russian History Month Gala at the New York State Capitol.

In addition to being a performer and a diction coach, Irina is a dedicated educator who believes in preserving ethnic culture and traditions. She serves as an artistic mentor for children folk Ensemble Kalinka in Atlanta, GA and is deeply inspired and honored to take part in raising a new generation of young performers who cherish their roots while celebrating their uniqueness and diversity. Irina is currently studying in the voice studio of Doris Yarick-Cross. Irina is excited and grateful to be able to share her love for the music that is so dear to her heart with everyone who will have a chance to attend this wonderful event.
