Cory Clines, bass, hails from the mountains of Star Valley, Wyoming, where the scenery is stunning but the opera non-existent. Praised by Opera News as being in “excellent voice and show[ing] a real spark of stage savvy”, and by the New York Times as giving “a standout performance”, Mr. Clines sings both protagonists and comedians on stages ranging from opera to operetta to contemporary musical theatre. Recent New York engagements have included Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro performed in Bryant Park with operamission, Fafner in Das Rheingold, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (both with Liederkranz Opera Theatre), Sir Williams in Grétry’s Richard Coeur-de-Lion with the American Classical Orchestra, numerous leading roles with Light Opera of New York, and the world premieres of three contemporary operas, foremost being The Pig, The Farmer, & The Artist, in which he played the titular Farmer Jones. A veteran of the Ohio Light Opera, Mr. Clines can be heard and seen on numerous audio recordings and DVDs (available on iTunes!) of the operetta repertory. Other favorites include Pangloss/Voltaire/Governor in Bernstein’s Candide at the Pine Mountain Music Festival, Count Ceprano in Rigoletto, Conspirator in Un ballo in maschera with Boston Lyric Opera, Dick Deadeye in H.M.S. Pinafore, The Poet in Kismet, and Gaston in Disney’s Beauty & the Beast. Mr. Clines received a postgraduate Artist’s Diploma at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and also holds degrees from the University of Rochester, New York, and it’s Eastman School of Music.
