[gn_dropcap style=”2″ size=”4″]D[/gn_dropcap]o you love to sing? Join members of Ars Musica for two summer sings featuring masterworks of the choral repertoire. Each evening will be conducted by our Music Director, Dusty Francis, and will feature soloists and accompanist. Sound a little intimidating? Don’t worry – we’ll all be there to enjoy making music together! On Tuesday, August 16, we will dive into Handel’s beloved Messiah and explore beyond the familiar “Christmas” portion as we sing Parts II and III. Containing some of the most thrilling and dramatic writing for both chorus and soloists in the oratorio (including the famed “Hallelujah Chorus”), the lesser known second and third parts tell of the crucifixion, resurrection, and second coming, all in Handel’s timeless style.
On Tuesday, August 23, join for Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Mendelssohn’s seldom-performed Die erste Walpurgisnacht. One of Mozart’s best-known mass settings was composed shortly after the composer’s return to Salzburg after failing to secure work in Paris or Mannheim. Die erste Walpurgisnacht tells the story of a wily group of Druids who outsmart the local Christian leaders so as to perform their now-outlawed annual pagan rituals. An unusual tale by Goethe with music by Mendelssohn creates a quintessentially Romantic cantata for chorus and soloists.
We will meet at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage St., Ridgewood, NJ at 7:30pm each night. A donation of $10 is requested, and scores will be provided. However, if you have a beloved score with markings from previous concerts, please bring it! Refreshments will be served.
